The date announcement teaser for the Netflix drama television miniseries “The Queen's Gambit" - much like the series - finds an unlikely synergy between the heady and the sensual. It's rhythmic, stylish, uptempo, but with intention and storytelling in every fleeting shot. Los Angeles based Editor and Wrangle member Haaris Baig cut the piece in collaboration with Netflix Creative Studio, and in 2021 it earned him a Clio Entertainment Gold Award within the Television/Streaming Drama category.
For the few of you who haven't yet binged the show, the series centers on the orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon, who is on a quest to become the greatest chess player in the world. It follows the beats of a sports tale, like a classic Hollywood boxing film, but it’s also a coming-of-age story about a woman succeeding in a male-dominated world. It is both a compelling period drama, but also a character study, and a feast for the eyes, all of which is so beautifully encapsulated in Haaris' marketing piece.
Prior to working with the Netflix Creative Studio, Haaris held a longterm staff editing position at Trailer Park, where he worked on several iconic theatrical campaigns including "Get Out", "Spotlight", and "Shazam!".
