Born in Uganda and raised in Kenya, Patience Asaba Katushabe began her filmmaking journey in 2011 as an editing participant in one of the Maisha Film lab’s youth film programs. Under the same Program (mentored by Joel Karekezi), she directed her first short film which won the Best Short Student Film award at Uganda’s Pearl Film Festival.
Since then she has acted as a Producer, Fixer, Coordinator, and Assistant Director on a whole slew of short films, documentaries, music videos, and features, including "Queen of Katwe" and "A Fork, A Spoon, A Knight".
In 2017, Patience was a Producer and the 2nd Assistant Director on the TIFF selected feature film "The Mercy of the Jungle". The film follows Rwandan soldiers Sergeant Xavier and Private Faustin, who are sent to hunt down Hutu rebels in eastern Congo. When they are accidentally left behind in the jungle, with only each other to rely on, they embark on an odyssey through one of the most dangerous terrains on earth, faced with the depths of their own war-torn souls.
We are beyond proud to feature Patience, a true multi-hyphenate and multi-talent, and are excited for what else she has in store. Speaking of, her six-part limited series podcast, "VINTAGE OR VIOLENCE", is available on Spotify now. Give it a listen, and be sure to send Patience if you have questions on shooting in Uganda and beyond!
