Before "Narcos" or "Cable Girls" there was only one Netflix original series that offered Spanish-language programming. "Club de Cuervos", which premiered on Netflix in 2015, was the company’s first foray into original Spanish-language scripted television. The series, in which billionaire Mexican siblings feud over the family-owned soccer team, was written not just with the Mexican markets in mind, but rather a global drama-, comedy-, and soccer-loving audience.
Isi Sarfati was tapped to be the cinematographer for the series, an experience which he describes as both enjoyable and weighty: "The most challenging aspect of shooting "Club de Cuervos" was that we all knew it would be the first Spanish-spoken release in the history of Netflix," says Isi. "It created a lot of pressure for all the crew members to make it the best we could."
The hard work paid off. Thanks to Isi and the entire talented cast and crew, the series was a huge success: The show was met with an incredibly positive reception among viewers, and Netflix went on to order three more seasons. "Club de Cuervos" also blazed the trail for over 100 other Netflix original Spanish-language shows currently streaming on the service.
