Nick Ray McCann directed "Love and Regret" for the Grammy-nominated bluegrass artist Billy Strings. The music video gives a special wink to Billy's fans, but has also resonated with the country audience at large: In January 2022, "Love and Regret" premiered on CMT and screened in Time Square.
"The thing that was the most rewarding was my cast and crew's attitudes. We filmed in Nashville, working with a very small production, but everyone was so dedicated to the project," says Nick. "We filmed everything in two marathon days, beginning at around 2:30am on the first day: We drove out to the country outside Nashville and hiked into the woods in order to film all of the campfire scenes."
Mary Booth is one of the leads in the video alongside Travis Hudson, who is actually an old friend of Nick's who flew in from Maryland to be a part of the project. Billy himself was a great artist and collaborator. "He wanted to act, so we cast him to play the antagonist in the story." Nick remembers.
Early on in the pre-production process Billy had sent Nick photos and a video of his 66 Chevelle named "Blue Bell". Nick pitched that they have the hero steal the car in the video, and Billy loved the idea of including it. "Billy's fans are really devoted to his work and having those little easter eggs in the story really made it a lot of fun to bring to life."
